Introduction

Higher education is bedrock of any civilized society and plays a pivotal role in shaping the generations for future. It remains one of the primary factors for the promotion and augmentation of the socio-economic parameters and for the enhancement of cultural environ of any region. As such the Department of Higher Education in Uttarakhand, keeping in sync with the tenets of UGC, is committed towards the development of critical thinking, stimulating the scientific temperament and inculcating cultural ethos in the students, enabling their all round personality development thereby eventually paving the prosperous paths for their glorious future ahead. Since inception, the Department of Higher Education, Uttarakhand has come a long way in terms of vision and infrastructure. The department, with a myriad of innovative policies, diligent teamwork and technologically robust mechanism is a force to reckon with, and currently boasts of 33 universities (11 state universities, 1 central university and 18 private universities) along with 3 institutes of national importance. Uttarakhand is also one of the first states to implement National Education Policy 2020 in higher education.

The Department considers dissemination of education, values and information to be of paramount significance. Keeping this in view, it believes in keeping abreast of the latest ICT available and stresses upon the need for wide ICT usage that gets reflected in most of the institutions under its wings. Apart from promoting the usage of latest teaching-learning tools available, the department, over the years, has successfully created a rich repository of e- books in the form of digital repository under the aegis of e- Granthalaya in several colleges and universities of the state and another flourishing repository of recorded online lectures on various subjects and topics by eminent professors and faculty members is also available on its official YouTube channel Uttarakhand Tele Education Network. Overall the department of higher education in Uttarakhand is committed to provide a holistic, value based and skill oriented education to the youth of future.
